Obama has recently announced that he is waiving a federal law that prevents weapons from being sent to designated-terrorist organizations so that he can arm Syrian rebels. He’s doing so out of a humanitarian need to help the moderates caught in the bloody Syrian civil war; the only problem is that the people he wants to arm aren’t moderates at all.
The Syrian rebel forces are at best supporters of oppressive Shariah law and at worst Sunni jihadists who wish to eliminate all other religions and sects. The largest rebel faction, the al-Nusra Front, has publicly pledged allegiance to Al Qaeda. If we arm them, weapons will eventually be put into the hands of our worst enemies.
There is no reason for America to involve itself in the Syrian civil war, as horrible as it is. Bashar Al-Assad is a tyrant, but he has posed no threat whatsoever to America—he’s even agreed to hand over his cache of chemical weapons. By arming the rebels, Obama is not only aiding terrorists, but creating a threat to his country that was not previously there.
Is that really something a Nobel Peace Prize winner should do?
