Although I don't know how credible they are, you might wish to check out the web sites http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consumer_Cellular and http://consumer-cellular.pissedconsumer.com/ and also do web searches (Yahoo, Google, Bing, etc) for other information about them.
FYI, both my ex-employer and my Credit Union offer discounts with major carriers (Sprint, Verizon), so you may wish to check with your employer (if you have one) and financial institution(s).
I had Consumer Cellular in the past. They offer an excellent service for a very good price IF you live in the right service areas. They operate off of AT&T towers. I had them for about 6 months, but because AT&T doesn't have very good coverage in my area I had to change carriers. The answer to text/data plans that you asked is yes. Their customer service is top notch also. They are based in Portland, Oregon and all their customer service is based in the USA (Oregon & Arizona).

I have Consumer Cellular.
I too live in FL and the AT&T service is fine.
I would like to get an iPhone, however, their prices are a bit steep so I am looking into ClubCellular which AMAC is connected with.
The wife and I share 1200 minutes and a data plan (I don't know what it's all about) with Consumer Cellular for $52.50 a month. At times they will give us some free minutes. This is less than 1/2 what AT&T was charging us.
