I wasn’t sure exactly how to begin this letter, but the simple act of sitting down to write seems to have helped tremendously. That we are on the eve of a great national turning point is hardly news to any of you. At the risk of sounding “preachy”, I just wanted to relate a few thoughts and also to clarify for myself what we are actually deciding.

Anyone who knows me (and paid even the most cursory attention) knows that I have a deep love for my country and the spirit in which it was created. They would also know that I have a deep faith in God, Creator of all, and His Son Jesus Christ through whom all was created. Our founding fathers had this same faith, and it guided their reasoning and sharpened their intellect as they began the process of breaking away from the rule of an unjust king and forming this great American Experiment in self-government. Contrary to what the liberal progressives would have you believe, the only thing “living and breathing” in the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution is the Holy Spirit, which guided their creation. The principles themselves are rock-solid, Biblical, and not open for liberal interpretation.

The basic contention of progressive liberalism is that there is no fundamental truth, that truth changes with the times, that human nature is changing (progressing) as we “evolve” into a better, more perfect species and that an “enlightened” and unelected few should be at the head of a vast government that directs every facet of our lives for the greater common good.  This should help explain why liberals can make outrageous statements that completely contradict each other, and still claim both to be true. This should also explain why they want all mention of God stricken from the public record, and erased from the public conscience. The very thought of unchanging truth is a threat to them.

The constitutional framers knew that human nature is unchanging as well, but that with Divine guidance, morality and self-control, we were capable of self-governance. This brings me to a question: Is this what we still want as a nation? Do we still have the boldness of Patrick Henry (“Give me liberty or give me death”) or are we so timid that we will trade our freedom for the empty promise of governmental healthcare and food stamps?

I would encourage everyone to read some of the documents from the founding fathers, and the men who influenced them. They are very enlightening. These were very educated men who put a great deal of thought into their work, intending to keep “ourselves and our posterity” free. I know that many Christians today shy away from politics, but that is a huge mistake. We are supposed to be the salt of the earth, to stand for Christ. How can you take a stand for anything by hiding in a closet?

If Obama is allowed a second term, the American experiment in self-government will be over. We will cease to be a Constitutional Republic when we cede our individual rights to the State and submit to over-reaching government mandates. Some say this would be the beginning of the end, but they are wrong. The beginning of the end was the “New Deal” under Franklin Roosevelt. This will jump us way past the middle. I sincerely hope that I am alarming you. I would like to leave you with a few quotes and a short reading list. It is worth your time to find these on the Internet, and they won’t take long to read.

"The price good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men." - Plato

“Compromise is surrender on the installment plan” - H.L. Roush, Sr. (Author of “Henry and the Great Society”)

“From time to time, we have been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. But if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else? All of us together, in and out of government, must bear the burden. The solutions we seek must be equitable, with no one group singled out to pay a higher price.” – Ronald Reagan (1st Inaugural Address

Reading List:

“On The Commonwealth” – Marcus Tullius Cicero

“The Politics” – Aristotle

“Discourses Concerning Government” – Algernon Sidney

“Second Treatise of Government” – John Locke

“The Inspiration of the Declaration” – Calvin Coolidge

“Letter to the Danbury Baptist Association” – Thomas Jefferson

“Farewell Address” – George Washington

“A Time For Choosing” – Ronald Reagan

“1st Inaugural Address” – Ronald Reagan

JUDE 1.17. But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; 18. How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. 19. These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit. 20. But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, 21. Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. 22. And of some have compassion, making a difference: 23. And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. 24. Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, 25. To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.
