When I was young and in grade school, (holy Molly that was six decades ago) in fifth grade we studied the Constitution, and the Bill of rights.  We read things out loud that  those people that signed these documents said.  "God" was mentioned, and we said "the word".  No one cringed, or gasped or looked down at the floor when we said "God".  No one was threatened with expulsion, no one was suspended, no notes were sent home to parents for saying "GOD".

We all survived the experience, and most went on to be like me, growing old, still saying God.  So what happened?  Today, saying God is frowned upon in schools.  Children are at risk to be suspended, for saying God.  How come?  Because being good Christians, we did not want to cause others to be embarrassed because they practiced a different religion than we did, so when the word "GOD" offended them, we quit saying it.  They capitalized on our refraining from saying GOD, and now when today's kids  say GOD, they are looked at as possible reactionaries, or children of terrorists.

The Democratic convention, (DNC) has decided its platform should exclude the word GOD.  Some people say, "Geez, just because they don't mention GOD, don't mean they don't like GOD...   Really?

(This should open up some reaction by some people.)

It truly seems that the more we remove God from our lives, the faster we continue to go downhill.

The political correctness of not saying anything about God because you might offend someone is a bunch of crap. This country was founded on Chrtistian values. (Yes I know not all of the founding fathers were professing Christians, but they had the same high moral standards as Christans should.)

You hear stories of children being expelled from school for saying or writng the word God, Jesus, or for a picture of a cross. You cannot in many areas even carry a Bible to school. (I wonder if that applies to the Koran.) If you are offended by Christianity, so what, this is supposed to be a free nation, I am offended by what is written in the koran, but I am not asking for it to be banned. I just don't want it to be the law of the land (Sharia Law)

The separation of church and state, as it is presented today is a myth. It simply means that there should not be a state controlled church such as there is in England (Anglican) where the state pays the vicars. It does not in any way mean that we can't say the word God, or have Christian oriented public desplays. (10 commandments in court for example, nativity scenes, etc.)

We are currently on the long slippery slope, and the democrats are certainly hasting us along.

I am glad that someone else know the meaning of 'separation of church and state' and that it does not mean we should exclude GOD in our lives. There was no National Day of Prayer celebrated in the White House this year for the fear of 'offending' someone, instead they did a Muslim prayer thing. Well THAT OFFENDED ME but who am I, just a conservative, 'radical', 'racist' threat to others because I want to exercise MY freedom of speech?

When I was in the 5th Grade in Denver, Colorado, we were NOT taught any civics. Not the Constitution or it's amendments, not the branches of Government - NONE of that! Ten years after Tom was in school, the Constitution was out!

When I was in the 9th grade, Civics was a required course. I wanted to know what Civics was. I had  achoice of two teachers: 1) Everybody's favorite - because they didn't learn anything but "listened to music and told jokes" all day (their words) &  2) "A really hard teacher" (also their words) . I took #2 & didn't get any Civics lessons! THIS GUY STARTED FIRST DAY with: "I know you all don't want to learn all that dry, boring, political stuff - so we're goin gto do something that was a big hit last year - we're going to learn how towns grow - from begining settlement to metropolis!" He pulled out some LEGOS and then a small booklet on the history of Seatle, Washington.

It wasn't until I got a copy of the Constitution for joining the Heritage Foundation that I had even seen it init's entirety!

This is what the "Late Baby Boomers & Baby Busters" were taught - it's now our kids coming up to lead? I know what they've been taught: Socialism! I've been countering it in my four (Adult) children.

On separation of Church and State. I am glad to see these posts. The same people who cry "Religious Intolerance!" practice it against only one World View (and it's religious manifestations) - that being Christianity!

This is interesting conjecture but I am not convinced there is a link from reduced religion in public schools and reduction of liberty nationwide. I assure you all that I am not a conservative because I was exposed to religion when I was growing up; quite the contrary, most of the "religious" people I knew were political liberals.

Having said that, I certainly have no problem with there being more religion in public schools for those who wish it, provided that it be a positive (here's what is good about religion) rather than negative (here's why anyone who doesn't accept Jesus is a bad person). And certainly more core traditional American (yes, Christian) values would be a good thing!

That’s exactly the way they want it EZO.
The politics of the Left is founded on humanism (not all who are liberals understand that) which finds support in the theory of evolution and the false science which supports that theory. No place for God in any of that.

Early on in the first Clinton administration Hillary and then VP Al Gore both talked a lot about “re-inventing government” to make it function on the basis of “ inter-dependence”. Most of us were never quite sure what they meant by that but based upon the ideology of the left and the Democrat Party Platform I drafted a new "Declaration of Inter-dependence” which I think comes close to describing their goals. See if you agree.

Declaration of Inter-dependence.
“We hold these truths to be relative to the values of society according to the situational circumstance of our current existence: That all persons have evolved into a natural condition of in-equality; that government has evolved to level the playing field by granting certain rights to some humans, relative to the changing needs of society, among these, the right of under achievers to be taken care of from the cradle to grave by the achievers under the direction of the government; and certain other rights to other humans, among these, the right of the benevolent elite to regulate the lives of the inferior as they shall deem most fit to balance the inequities of evolution and to provide for the well-being of the masses. That to meet these ends all rights endowed to the people by government are endowed relative to the needs of society and subject to change as deemed proper by government. That all power of government is justly derived from the need of government to achieve its ends, and, the ends of government being the common welfare of the masses, these ends justify all means.”

I believe the left doesn't want GOD in anything; they want you to believe everything comes from government and you have no inalienable rights. It's all part of the plan here folks.

Tom, Good post. Because it was posted before I became a member I had not noticed it. Glad EZO,s post brought it back up.

Like you, when I was in school we studied the Constitution, Declaration of Indpendence and even the Mayflower Compact in Junior High. In the first grade we learned to sing such songs as "God bless America" and "America the Beautiful". Our school Christmas plays were always about the birth of Jesus. I don't recall any incidence of someone complaining about being offended. I think our generation was much better at practising, live and let live, than today's "tolerant" generation is.

I basically agree, but there was a problem with black/white relations, as there is now.

No matter how many things guilty white liberals have showered on blacks, for the most part not a lot has changed. A certain segment of the race still blames all their ills on whitey.

Point taken, Stockman.

I should have said, "better but not perfect".

Segregation (which was created and kept in place by the Democrats) was a problem. So is Affirmative action (which also was created and is being kept in place by the Democrats). The effect of both is to create a distinction between the white Americans and their non-white counterparts. The latter is as racist as the former, in my opinion.
