If you are looking fro some reasonable entertainment, go to Ghosttowns.com, and see if there are any ghost towns in you area.  The wife and I have had a great time visiting  ghost towns in Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and California.  It's cheap entertainment, and educational as well, not to mention you travel at your own pace.

It sounds like fun. Unfortuately we have pretty much none here in Wisconsin.

I do however remember visiting some on our way back from California after I was discharged from the Navy. We still have pictures of some of them.

If you love old airplanes - Dayton, Ohio is home to Wright-Patt Air Force Base with a fantastic museum! I highly recommend it.

Tom, have you ever been to Shakespeare, New Mexico?  It is a quaint old ghost town advertised as “the West’s most authentic ghost town.”  It is located about 2 miles or so from Lordsburg, NM about 17 miles from the NM-AZ borders.  It has several, well preserved, adobe structures, including a hotel, mail station, general store, saloon, and blacksmith shop.  My son just participated in an old west reenactment there earlier this summer.  The next scheduled reenactment is scheduled for August 25 & 26, 2012.

WOW!! Sounds like a neat place to visit, am going to put it on my list. I am more interested in the cemetries, and my wife likes the ghost towns. There are lot of great places to see, and ghost towns just sort of have some magic in them. Nevada, Arizonia, and New Mexico have a lot of them to see.

When I was searching for an exotic place to honeymoon 32 years ago, Hawaii came to mind. No getting ripped off changing currency! My wife and I had a great time. We found a reasonable motel near Waikiki that had a "sister" hotel on the beach that we were able to use and a private condo on the Kaanapali coast on Maui that rented space by the day. The condo had a kitchen and we thought that we would save money by grocery shopping but found that restaurants were not that much more expensive than buying groceries! Remember, though, that was 32 years ago and things may have changed since (or maybe not). :)

Something we learned was to not call residents "Hawaiians" unless they are indigenous peoples -- residents are "Islanders;" those of us from the contiguous 48 states must remember to not refer to ourselves as "Americans" in a way that makes it seem we are distinguishing ourselves from Islanders, who are Americans, as well -- we are "mainlanders."

A fresh island pineapple is a different fruit than what I've ever had on the mainland -- MUCH juicier!

Interesting places to visit (IMHO):

  • anywhere on the islands
  • a luau
  • Oahu
  • the Honolulu zoo
  • Polynesian Cultural Center (easily reachable by city bus but be careful to take the eastbound bus if you are starting from Honolulu -- the trip the other way was VERY long, especially due to a long layover at the northern tip of Oahu!)
  • naval tour of the Arizona memorial
  • Big Island of Hawaii
  • the black sand beaches and Kilauea volcano on and near the southeast coast
  • a coffee plantation near Kona
  • a museum in northern cattle country
  • Kauai
  • the best beach I've ever seen on its south coast -- Brennecke's beach, the small beach immediately to the east of Poipu Beach park
  • Maui
  • mount Haleakala (pronounced ha-lay-A-ka-la; ha-lay-a-KA-la Hawaiian for raspberry :) )
