Like it or not, we will not have enough workers following the Baby Boomers to fund Social Security at anything like the current benefits level. Even eliminating COLAs from SS benefits will not do the job. Something much more dramatic will have to be done.
At the same time, we have 10+ million "undocumented workers" who are working in an underground ecocomy and not paying income or SS taxes. Current law says that a person who is in the US illegally must return to his/her own country and wait 10 years before appling for a visa, and that he/she must be self supporting while in the US.
Since we are not going to deport 10+million people, why not let them register as temporary workers who must pay income and SS taxes for 10 years WITHOUT ANY ACCRUED BENEFITS. Then, if they have been self supporting and haven't committed any crimes, grant them permanent residency status. Remember, their children who are born in the US are citizens anyway, so why perpetuate an issue that can be demagogued by the opposition?
This sounds like the answer to this issue. Like it or not, the problem exists and we can't ignor a remedy any longer...Someone needs to run with this one, hopefully Romney. It's a win-win for everybody. Love it !
Social Security is already bankrupt as is America. It is all a house of cards worse than Greece, and won't take much of a breeze to make it tumble.It will tumble and should make for some exciting times, similar to what happened in the early 1860's, but more intense.
