The wife and I went to Wal-Mart today to get some cloth diapers for our coming grandson. Our daugter-in-law wants to use cloth rather than disposable, and we whole heartedly agree. She said make sure they are "Made in America". There was no doubt in my mind that cloth diapers made in America would be an easy find.
First we had a devil of a time finding the cloth diapers. Finally found them on the bottom shelf near the end of the isle. There they were, GERBERS cloth diapers. I grabbed two packs and thru them in the cart and was walking over to look at some baby clothes when my wife says, "These are made in China". I grabbed a pack, and sure enough right on the label, "Made In China" These were GERBER. The name I grew up with, the name my kids grew up with. It's an American Company, what's with the "Made In China" label? I looked for other cloth diapers. There were none, just GERBERS. GASP!!! There has to be a company that makes cloth diapers in America. We looked around for a clerk, we cruised three or four isles, and did not see any. (Must have been break time or something.)
Needless to say, we put the diapers back, and will go to "Babys R Us", or Target, or K-Mart. If all else fails we will order them on the internet. I still can't believe that GERBERS imports diapers from China, and puts them out for sale under the Gerbers name. Anyone else find this upsetting? Anyone know where "Made in USA" diapers are sold?
Too bad I didn't see this a year ago. I would have directed you to the internet. There a lots of small shippers that sell cloth diapers made in America. The styles are different from what we used in the '70s, but I've seen people very happy with them. They are quite pricey, too, but still cheaper than a babyhood full of disposables, even including the cost of washing them.
Just put 'cloth diapers' in the search engine and lots will pop up. Your choice.
Thanks for your help. We found a friend that had some hiding in a closet, and she GAVE them to us to give to our son and daughter-in-law. Also met a lady that says she used dishtowel for diapers on her kids. We had 8-10 dishtowels so we added them. C
Was really shocked that Wal-Mart, KMart and Target did not have "Made in America" diapers.
