I know there are not a lot of people that hunt, or target shoot that are members here, but the sneaky way both the house and the senate are plotting to restrict the sale of ammunition will hurt those of us that do hunt and target shoot. Senate bill S.3458, and House bill H.R.6241 would restrict the selling of ammunition (1,000 rounds or more), and require that the dealer notify the Federal Government within five business days on sales that are or exceed 1,000 rounds.
People say "wow 1,000 rounds, that's a lot of ammunition." It is, but if a father wants to take his sons and friends out shooting their .22 cal rifles, a thousand rounds can be shot in a hurry. i.e., five sons/friends 1,000 rounds, equals 200 rounds each. Seldom is 1,000 rounds ordered, unless it happens to be a great deal cost wise. Not everyone shoots .22cal, and not everyone orders 1,000 rounds at a time, but, if these become law, what will be the next restriction?
In the Colorado escapade, the shooter did not have a thousand rounds with him, and in all probability had no plans to eventually fire a thousand rounds. (Possible government involvement?) Only the shooter can say why he bought so many rounds.
I shoot, and sometimes my grandson and I shoot. Why should I pay $14.58 for fifty rounds, (9MM) when I can get 1,000 a whole lot cheaper. (About $160.00) If nothing else, its a little bonding between grandson and grandfather, and Congress wants to restrict that.
Our current adminsitration is doing everything it can do to deter people from purchasing, owning, selling, or collecting firearms or the ammuntion that is needed to fire them.
We need a group to track and thwart their activities. I would suggest joining a group like the NRA. There is power in numbers.
Just like joining AMAC makes our voice louder, joining the NRA will do the same thing regarding firearms issues.
I joined the NRA as a Life Member sometime back in the early 80's. I have never regretted that decision. And I beleive I never will.
I would like to sugest the National Association For Gun Rights as another group that is doing a great job in keeping an eye on government interence in our Second Ammendent rights. And Tom, Don't be too sure that there are not many members on this fourm that are interested in this matter, we are everywhere!
My thoughts were of 350,000 members, not a lot are shooters. I am sure a lot are owners, but get in very little range time, or practice shooting. So many people have the weapon, "someplace", and do have "some ammunition", also someplace.
Personally, I have found that shooting with the grandson and my son creates a common bond, and give us old timers a chace to pass on the little things that make shooting accurate a lot of fun.
NRA has done a lot to protect our Second Amendment, rights and I am sure that the National Association fro Gun Rights is also battling for us, but we as citizens have to get off our backsides, and make our feeling known to those..... represenitives that are in office. Clean your weapon, and keep your powder dry. Remember, you are the weapon, a gun is just a tool.

There are several good Gun Related Organizations in America, but of course the NRA leads them all in membeship and clout.
I have often wondered what it would be like if all these other organizations' members switched to the NRA.
WOW, how much influence would they then have? Instead of being fragmented, if we were joined together in just one group how much stronger of a front could we present to to gun-grabbers and gunophobes everywhere?
What are your thoughts?

By having different organizations it forces the anti gun advocates to fight on many fronts thus dividing their power. There are many people that own guns that do not belong, or want to belong to any organzation. The thing to remember is the more groups you belong to, the more times your name may pop up on membership lists. (Yes, the Federal Government will get the listes of ALL registered gun owners, veterans, persons that speak out against the administration, and any other group they desire information on.) IF the election is not held due to martial law, there will be attempts at gun confiscation in the name of law and order. (National Defense Authorization Act, NADD is a prime example).
Personally, I send emails to my Senator, (Harry Reid) all the time requesting he support the Second Amendment, (kinda like peeing in the wind). Most times I get a message back telling me how he is working on "green jobs", and appreciates me contacting him, or my emails are ignored. I don't have the answer as to what to do, but, I think every American citizen, armed or not, needs to (1) Read the Constitution, (2) Read the Declaration of Independence, determine what they believe in, and what they are wiling to stand for, and stand against.
I think the different groups putting pressures from different directions is slowing down the anti gun advocates, hopefully until after the elections in November.
Want to know what some of our forefathers thought about gun rights?Check out these quotes:
"The Constitution shall never be construed to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms." Samuel Adams, during Massachusetts' U.S. Constitution Ratification Convention (1788).
"Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence." George Washington.
"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." Thomas Jefferson, Proposed Virginia Constitution (1776), Jefferson Papers 344 (J. Boyd, ed. 1950).
"The great object is, that every man be armed...Everyone who is able may have a gun..." Patrick Henry, 3 Elliott Debates 386.
"Arms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property. Horrid mischief would ensue were the law-abiding deprived of the use of them." Thomas Paine, Thoughts on Defensive War (1775).
"To disarm the people; that it was the best and most effectual way to enslave them..." George Mason, 3 Elliott Debates (on the Constitution) 380.
Hello Tom, I agree with you totally. I ordered ammunition on line, (1000 rds) because I do shoot targets alot. I am not a hunter but do like going to the range for target shooting. I also reload my own ammunition. Its not unusual to go through 1000 rounds in a few days at the range. I think those who think otherwise should realize that 1000 rounds is not that much for anyone who is serious about shooting. Limiting the amount of ammunition a person may purchase on line is like me telling a golfer he can only buy, say five golf balls. Granted there are some who will find that more than enough but for those golfers who are not the best, five is barely enough to finish one round. Anyway, good topic, thanks for bringing it up.
as far as "other" gun organizations, here in Virginia, I would highly recommend Virginia Citizens Defense League, VCDL. This is not a defense gun group---they are PROACTIVE, not just defending our 2A rights, but aggressively going all out to reverse and correct previous "infringements" of our rights that have been passed as law against us in the past! I highly recommend them to any Virginians. At least sign up for our free VA-ALERT emails, at vcdl.org, and I bet you will see the value and want to be a part of this great Patriot group. Other states have similar organizations modeled on vcdl. Check out our record of specific changes to gun laws in Virginia, by working with our legislators each and every year for the last 15+ years!
Joe you are right. Many states have organizations and some have more than one.
I forgot another great one, online for ALL the states: Look up opencarry.org and go to the "forums," then click on a state, and see MANY topic threads of gun issues all over the country, where you can learn all about your rights and HOW to respond to all the (ignorant) persons who think they know the law, and try to tell you what you can and can't do with your sidearm. Really cool, I have learned so much there! The focus is on carrying not concealed, but openly, and the philosophy of why that is actually safer than concealed carry. Even if you don't agree with that viewpoint, any gun owner would benefit from reading those pages, for all the peripheral learning that you gain from reading the comments and vast knowledge of the law available there. Check it out, and be part of the discussions!
This morning I lucked out and was able to buy two boxes of ammo at Wal-Mart.
I placed the boxes on the front seat and headed back home, but stopped at a gas
station where a drop-dead gorgeous blonde in a short skirt was filling up her car
at the next pump.
She glanced at the two boxes of ammo, bent over and leaned in my
passenger window, and said in a sexy voice, "I'm a big believer in barter, old fella.
Would you be interested in trading sex for ammo?"
I thought for a few seconds and asked, "What kind of ammo 'ya got?"
