Through the years, and numerous trips to the Far East, I started to like Japanese instrumental music. The different pitches, and beats to the music is so very relaxing to me. Anyone else like Oriental music?
I got interested in Chinese music for probably the same reasons. The different type of music and instruments, and the unusual rhythms.
I first heard it when I was in the Navy and had shore leave in Hong Kong. I thought it was neat then, but I never did anything about it UNTI, I heard The12 Girls Band. A group of young women from China who made CD's and videos of that type of music.
I was hooked and bought several CD's and a video or two. I still enjoy listening to it from time to time.
Another thing I have found interesting is music from Eastern Europe. The music is folk type stuff, but I find it interesting to listen to even if I haven't a clue as to what they are saying. I found this on Pandora.

It can be very tasteful interesting and different. I myself am a guitarist and am always looking for ways to make my music different then the same old thing and tossing in a little oriental flair is a good way to do this!

In your travels to the orient, did you ever get a chance to visit Thailand?I lived in Bangkok for 4 years. What a beautiful country!I stillenjoy listening toThai and Lao music on the net; it brings back lots of fond memories.
Old Eagle, Never got to Thailand. Was on Okinawa Japan, Vietnam, Korea, Japan proper, and the Phillppines. I, like you have many wonderful memories of the Fareast, the music, the food, the drinks, and the wonderful people. The culture is amazing to see, and feel.
I love Japanese music! I often do Yoga to it. I have quite a bit of asian music actually. I have Hiroshima and Kitaro- both sort of new age, jazzy asian. I have a CD called the Samurai collection- it contains pieces for japanese drums and various vocal groups. One of my CD contains all sorts of Asian music-it's called the best of Asian Beats: japanese, chinese, Indian and tibetan: also has buddist chants, throat singing and bells- try doing yoga to that-awesome!!A great Japanese collection is called Green tea: has vocal groups like Pochill( similar to Hiroshima). One other group I have is Cibo Matto, some of their songs are a little raunchy but there are some good songs as well. I have a deep respect for the Japanese culture. I haven't seen Japan yet but it's on my to-do list
I don't do Yoga to the beat of the oriental music, but I can easily see how it could be done. Many years ago I lived out in own on Okinawa, and a neighbor played the Koto, and I really liked watching her practice, and the music was really relaxing. An Okinawan that worked in out motor pool played the Sami-sam, and when we would have a beer bust he would bring it and play and sing. I have always liked music from the fareast.
